Originate mainly from the tropical Americas with many cross cultivars developed. They complement the tropical landscape with glossy leaves and long-lived colourful flower spikes. They like a free draining shaded position whilst some become accustomed to full sun. Leaf colour is often as decorative as the flower spikes.

Native to Mexico with non-spiky foliage and broad grey-green leaves. Makes an excellent contrast in tropical gardens or as a container feature plant. An open sunny position is ideal and with well-drained soil. As it matures a long flower spike is produced which may be up to 1.5m in length! The plant dies after flowering.

Agapanthus is a native of South Africa and is commonly known as the African Lilly. Mature clumps can be 1m across and flower stems 1m tall. Flowers in spring and summer are commonly blue, however white flowers are also available. They make a good evergreen border planting for pools and the fence line
